It’s important to hold your top and bobbin threads when you start sewing on a machine because:

Avoids jamming the machine – If threads get sucked down into the bobbin area, they can jam the hook mechanism, which may force you to stop and re-thread or even clean out the bobbin case.

Keeps tension stable – Holding the threads for the first couple of stitches helps the machine maintain proper thread tension, so your seam starts cleanly instead of loose or bunched.

Protects your fabric – Tangled thread under the fabric can pull and distort delicate or lightweight fabrics, sometimes leaving puckers or even holes.

Prevents thread tangling ("bird’s nests") – If the threads aren’t held, the motion of the needle and bobbin hook can pull them back into the machine, causing a messy knot of thread under the fabric. 

A good habit is to gently hold both the top and bobbin tails (about 3–4 inches long) behind the presser foot as you take the first few stitches. After that, the machine will secure them on its own.
